Politico: Gulf States Don't Want to Take on Pro-Ukrainian Commitments

Brussels is failing to persuade Gulf states to make pro-Ukrainian commitments at the first summit of the European Union and the Gulf Cooperation Council, which will take place tomorrow.

This was reported by the European version of the American publication Politico, citing a draft joint statement by the summit participants.

What pro-Ukrainian commitments have the Persian Gulf countries abandoned?

According to Politico, the GCC member states did not support the clause proposed by Brussels on the need to increase sanctions pressure on Russia.

They also spoke out against the inclusion in the statement of a call for states cooperating with Russia to stop supplying it with equipment.

Instead of the wording proposed by Brussels, the Gulf countries chose to call on all parties to the conflict in Ukraine to stop supplying weapons to its participants.

Politico estimates that the document shows that Brussels and its Western allies are having trouble attracting other countries to the coalition to support Ukraine.

It is noted that the summit is intended to demonstrate the unity of its participants on all issues.

On October 14, the EU imposed sanctions on three Iranian air carriers, including the national airline Iran Air, four transport and industrial companies, and seven civil servants, military personnel, and businessmen, including Deputy Defense Minister Seyed Hamze Ghallandari.

The EU Council said the sanctions were imposed for the supply of missiles and drones to Russia, as well as for the transfer of missiles to the Houthis.

On September 16, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that the country continues to cooperate and trade with Russia, but has not supplied it with any missiles.
