Amid reports that Turkey has applied to join BRICS, the European Union has reminded Ankara of the need to respect EU values.
The corresponding statement was made at a press conference on September 3 by the representative of the European Union's foreign policy service, Peter Stano.
His statement is quoted by TASS .
Commenting on reports that Turkey has applied to join BRICS, Stano noted that Türkiye, like any other country, has the right to decide what is best for it.
He recalled that Türkiye is a candidate for EU membership.
And candidate countries, the European official continued, must respect the community’s values and comply with agreements.
According to Stano, the foreign policy of candidate countries must be fully consistent with the EU's foreign policy.
Including those carried out within the framework of trade agreements, the EU foreign policy service representative specified.
He stressed that the EU and BRICS are completely different organizations.
In terms of purpose, structure, everything, ” Stano added.
Yesterday, Bloomberg reported that Türkiye applied to join BRICS several months ago.
According to the agency, the issue of BRICS expansion may be considered at the association's summit in October.
