South Korean police have launched an investigation into the popular messenger Telegram.
As is known, not long ago its founder Pavel Durov was detained in France.
Seoul is investigating crimes related to sexual deepfakes.
Thiswas reported by MIA Rossiya Segodnya with reference to the South Korean agency Yonhap, which, in turn, referred to a statement from the police.
Just as it did in France, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Department has launched a preliminary investigation into Telegram, said National Police Investigation Agency Director Woo Jeong-soo.
According to him, the site is suspected of facilitating a number of crimes, in particular those related to the distribution of fake video materials.
Investigations are also underway into other crimes in which, in the opinion of law enforcement, the messenger may be involved.
At the same time, local police say that they encountered certain difficulties during the investigation.
It is explained that they are related to the fact that Telegram does not provide the police with the necessary information, such as account data.
This does not mean that we have not detained criminals using Telegram at all, we have our own investigation methods, and we are doing everything possible, the police noted.
Please note: This is the first time that South Korean police have launched an investigation into Telegram.
The country's government pointed to the growing concern of the international community about the fact that crimes are being committed through the messenger.
Therefore, Seoul expressed its determination to actively investigate all such incidents in its country.
Police are currently conducting a preliminary investigation into eight Messenger bots that automatically create sexually explicit deepfakes.
As part of this case, law enforcement officers are studying group chats on this platform, in which, according to their data, such content is being distributed.
It is possible that charges of complicity and aiding and abetting will be brought against the individuals who created the above-mentioned bots.
Police say that between August 26 and 29, 88 reports were received of sexual assaults involving deepfakes.
To date, law enforcement officers have managed to identify 24 suspected citizens.
