Owners of perennial plants, which include irises, should be aware of how to properly prepare perennials for winter.

So, according to experienced flower growers, irises should be pruned.

If you neglect this procedure and leave the fibrous leaves of irises until spring, this will create difficulties in caring for the plants, since the wet fibers will stretch like ropes.

Trim them now to prevent spring clutter and improve the overall appearance of your flowerbed.

It is recommended to trim the leaves in a triangular shape: this way the moisture will drain faster and the risk of rotting will be reduced.

If the plants are old or severely damaged, consider removing them completely. Otherwise, they may become a source of disease.

What to do after pruning

Once you have finished removing the affected leaves and flower stalks, carefully inspect each bush.

The rhizomes deserve special attention - temperature changes can damage them.

To prevent the roots of irises from getting wet or freezing, sprinkle them with sand or a mixture of sand and peat.
