How to Grow Seedlings with Strong Roots
The secret to a good root system is the length of the roots. However, in a small container, the roots have nowhere to grow.
Therefore, you should resort to trickery, namely, create artificial obstacles for the roots in the soil. Trying to go around them, the roots will increase in length.
How to make obstacles? Very simple – with cultivators. You can use vermiculite, perlite, zeolite.
Crushed eggshells are also a good loosening agent.
Secondly, good drainage is necessary for normal root development.
The easiest option is to make holes in the bottom of the seedling boxes/cups.
If the container size allows, you can make a drainage layer, for example, from foam plastic.
Watering through the tray also helps to increase the length of the roots.
Thirdly, nitrogen fertilizers must be used with caution.
Seedlings overfed with nitrogen have small and stunted roots.
