Well, what gardener doesn’t dream of growing large and juicy onions on a regular basis?
The problem is that for various reasons it is not always possible to obtain the desired harvest.
But there is a method, tested over the years and by the experience of our grandmothers, that always allows us to achieve an abundance of high-quality onions.
The emphasis here is on planting material, preparation of beds and simple care rules.
As the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, scientist-agronomist and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh explained, the first thing to do is to choose high-quality sets.
This means that the bulbs should be firm, without any damage or signs of disease.
Before planting, they need to be warmed up, which will speed up growth and prevent them from bolting.
You can put the onion sets in a warm place, say, closer to the radiator, or warm them up in the oven at the lowest temperature.
Before planting, our grandmothers soaked the bulbs in a solution of potassium permanganate - an effective disinfection option.
This prevents diseases and improves germination.
And before planting, it was customary to generously sprinkle the beds with wood ash.
It fertilizes the soil well and protects plants from pests.
If you want to get large onions, provide them with the necessary amount of light and moisture.
Constant watering is also necessary, especially in the first weeks after planting. This stimulates rapid root development.
However, at the end of the season, you need to water less so that the bulbs gain density and weight.
In addition, do not forget to loosen the soil and remove weeds.
To get a good harvest, give the onion what it loves - fertilizer in the form of mullein or grass infusion.
In the second half of the season, you can “treat” the plant with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers.
Such “treats” promote the correct formation of bulbs.
