Perhaps the gardener overdid it with nitrogen fertilizers.
It is possible that the owner of the summer cottage rarely applied potassium fertilizers or allowed a calcium deficiency.
There was no protection from illnesses
The middle of the tomatoes could be inedible due to such a dangerous disease as stolbur (another name is phytoplasmosis).
To protect tomato bushes from this disease, the gardener had to fight pests and remove weeds in a timely manner.
When infected bushes appeared, they had to be immediately pulled out and burned.
