A large harvest of tomatoes collected from your own plot is probably every gardener’s dream.
But sometimes the obstacle on this path is the fattening of tomatoes. How to prevent this phenomenon, the expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh told.
While for other greenhouse plants the fertile soil is very important, for tomatoes this does not matter.
Moreover, excessive use of fertilizers can sometimes even harm this crop, so leave manure and cow dung for cucumbers - they do not bring any benefit to tomatoes.
For the first 2-3 weeks after you plant the seedlings in a permanent place, forget about watering at all - during this time, the tomatoes will have enough moisture that was added to the holes during planting.
In the future, the bushes should be watered not often, but abundantly, say, once a week, 5-7 liters of water per plant.
However, frequent watering using small doses of water is fraught with the development of a superficial root system in the crop and, as a consequence, a decrease in yield.
As we have already said earlier, fertilizers containing nitrogen are not desirable for tomatoes, as they lead to the growth of green mass and fattening.
If you notice that your tomatoes are actively growing, give them a little stress – for example, by reducing watering or removing a few lower leaves. As a result, the tomatoes will “think about offspring”, will start to bloom more actively and set fruit.
Fertilizers should be applied only when there is a clear deficiency of one or another element or during the period of fruit filling.
