Tired of plum shoots: how to get rid of them forever

06.04.2024 12:45

The plum tree, beloved by many summer residents and gardeners, has poor quality.

It constantly “throws up” young shoots, which expand to such an extent that the area around the plant turns into a real impenetrable jungle.

Moreover, the nearby flora suffers from the undergrowth. Therefore, young shoots have to be cut down several times per season.

A sure way to defeat the enemy

There is a way that will help minimize the efforts to fight the “enemy”, that is, it will rid you of plum shoots forever.

This option involves several “recipes” that are not at all difficult to follow.

The details were reported by the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, scientist agronomist and landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh .

Nine simple steps

First, we will cut off all the shoots at the root and cover the trunk circle with black agrofibre.

Second. It is necessary to feed the plum with a mineral complex, organic matter. Apply it to the trunk circle.

Third. If the summer is dry, be sure to water the plum, but make furrows around the crown in advance.

Fourth. We trim the crown gradually, there is no need to try to remove as many branches as possible at once.

Fifth. The emerging shoots should be cut off immediately from the roots, at soil level.

Sixth. It is necessary to carefully dig up the soil in the tree trunk circle without touching the roots.

Seventh. Add a 5-10 cm layer of soil. You can mix it with compost or humus to fertilize the tree at the same time.

Eighth. We compact the poured soil (to make it harder for the roots to break through to the surface), and then pour a 3-5 cm layer of sand on top and tamp it down.

By the way, you can lay roofing felt near the plum tree, thereby blocking the shoots’ access to light.

Ninth. It is necessary to choose quality material for planting: a good seedling grafted onto a varietal rootstock that does not produce shoots.

Previously we talked about how to protect potatoes from fusarium.
