Tree hydrangea can be pruned both in autumn and spring.

However, if you choose the first option, the risk of the shoots freezing increases, so the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh recommends pruning the plant in the spring.

But even in this case there are some nuances, which we will tell you about today.

It is worth starting with the fact that tree hydrangea has the property of releasing a lot of juice when pruned late.

This can lead to exhaustion of the plant, so it is important to prune before the sap starts to flow. If the buds have already swollen and the sap has started to flow, then you can no longer prune. You need to postpone pruning until autumn.

Also, keep in mind that tree hydrangeas have heavy inflorescences, so if you trim them too high, the plant may bend towards the ground due to the weight of the inflorescences.

Such consequences should be expected also because tree hydrangeas have a weak root system, and they need several years to form a thick trunk. A thin trunk will not be able to withstand the weight of the inflorescences and may break.

The best solution, given the above circumstances, would be low pruning to two or three pairs of buds.

Don't be afraid to prune the hydrangea hard. This will stimulate the growth of new shoots and make the plant even more lush and blooming. Cuts should be made 1 cm above the bud at an angle.

Previously, we talked about unexpected fertilizers that can easily be found in the kitchen.
