We would hardly be wrong if we said that, although cucumbers, eggplants and tomatoes are mainly grown in the greenhouse, the latter crop can still be found here most often.
That is why the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh decided to talk about fertilizers that should be used in the spring for tomatoes grown in a greenhouse.
In the spring, when preparing the greenhouse for the new season, 3-4-year-old humus is usually scattered on the beds. Horse manure is considered the best option among summer residents, although such useful elements for plants as nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus and magnesium can be found in cow manure.
It is worth noting that semi-rotted manure can be added to the soil in the fall, but in the spring, as in the case of fresh manure, adding such fertilizer to the soil can lead to burns of plant roots.
As an alternative to humus, you can use compost, peat or three- to four-year-old chicken manure.
Once you have decided on the type of fertilizer, it is important to calculate the correct amount. It is necessary to avoid over-fertilizing to avoid excessive growth of tomatoes in the summer. The soil requires a balanced amount of nutrients.
The standard recommendation for adding compost is to use 3 kilograms per square meter, as vegetable crops take a large amount of nutrients from the soil during the season.
If you haven’t fertilized the soil for a long time, you can add more humus – 4-6 kilograms per square meter.
