The traditional method of growing seedlings in pots and disposable containers is increasingly being replaced by alternative methods.
The reason for this phenomenon, according to the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , is that such “innovations” often give more effective results.
Today we want to share with you one of these successful methods of planting seedlings – the “snail”.
Advantages of planting seedlings in a "snail" pattern
First, about the pros. So, if you use the method discussed in this article, you will end up with:
- significantly lower soil consumption;
- saving space on the windowsill;
- the ability to transplant seedlings without damaging the root system;
- ease of care for seedlings.
What to make a "snail" from
To create the "snail" you can use different materials, but it is important that they are waterproof.
Experience shows that the best results are obtained when using polyethylene foam (isolon) or polypropylene foam with a thickness of 2 mm.
These materials have good dimensional stability, high flexibility for easy twisting and protect seedlings from the cold.
Snail landing technology
If you decide to try this method, you will need to follow the following steps.
- A small layer of fertile soil is poured onto the fabric tape.
- The seeds are evenly distributed along the tape at a distance of about 1-2 cm from the edge.
- The tape is carefully rolled into a roll and secured with an elastic band.
- The resulting “snails” are placed in a common container and watered (watering is necessary in the future, since due to the small amount of soil, the “snails” dry out quickly).
- The container is covered with film on top to create greenhouse conditions.
- After the seedlings appear, the film is removed, and the plants continue to grow and develop.
- Before planting, you need to unroll the tape and take out the plants.
