Sometimes beginners in plant growing do not even want to take on the cultivation of gladioli, because they believe that only experienced gardeners can handle this task.

However, the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh is convinced: you will achieve what you want if you follow the recommendations below.

Choose the right varieties

Expensive hybrids of foreign selection are not your option: to get a luxurious flowerbed, look for varieties intended for your region, which are distinguished by strong peduncles and large corrugated flowers.

Find a suitable place

When choosing a place for gladioli, follow 2 main criteria: lots of sun and no drafts. Every 3 years, the location of the flowerbed should be changed.

Take care of gladioli before planting

Be sure to treat the planting material with fungicides to protect them from fungal diseases, and to stimulate rapid growth of the bulb, use short-term soaking in a solution of sodium humate or heteroauxin.

Plant the bulbs on time

The result of growing gladioli will not be so impressive if you miss the right planting dates. For the middle zone, this is the period from May 1 to May 20, when the soil has warmed up to at least 10 degrees with a plus sign.

Be sure to feed the flowers

At the beginning of the growing season, gladioli should receive a sufficient amount of nitrogen, as well as some potassium. Afterwards, phosphorus should be added to these elements, and by autumn, nitrogen should be completely abandoned.
