Orchids are exquisite and beautiful flowers that can decorate any interior. However, many lovers of these plants face the problem of lack of or rare flowering. How to make an orchid bloom more often and longer?

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti" - a scientist, agronomist, landscape designer, reminded about the secrets of growing orchids.

What is needed for abundant flowering of orchids

In order for an orchid to bloom abundantly and regularly, it needs to be provided with optimal conditions for growth and development. Here are the main factors that affect orchid blooming:

Light. Orchids need bright but diffused light, without direct sunlight. It is best to place orchids on eastern or western windows. In winter, you can use additional lighting with phytolamps.

Temperature. Orchids need a warm and moderate climate, without sudden temperature changes. The optimal temperature for most orchid species is from +18 to +25 degrees during the day and from +15 to +18 degrees at night. A drop in temperature at night promotes the formation of flower stalks.

Humidity. Orchids need high air humidity, about 60-80%. For this, you can use humidifiers, trays with wet expanded clay or moss, and also regularly spray the plants from a spray bottle.

Watering. Orchids need moderate watering, without over-watering or drying out the substrate. Orchids should be watered with soft and warm water when the substrate is completely dry. It is best to water orchids by immersing the pot in water for 10-15 minutes, and then letting the excess water drain.

Top dressing. Orchids need regular top dressing with special fertilizers for orchids, which contain nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and microelements. Orchids need to be top dressed once every two weeks during the growing and flowering period, and once a month in winter.

How to Stimulate Orchids to Bloom

If you have created all the necessary conditions for your orchids, but they still do not want to bloom, you can try to stimulate their flowering in one simple way. To do this, you will need:

• A bag made of polyethylene or transparent film;

• Spray with water;

• Scissors.

The mode of action is as follows:

1. Cut a 30 x 30 cm square out of a bag or film;

2. Fold the square in half and make a small cut in the corner;

3. Place the bag on the orchid flower stalk so that it is inside the bag and the leaves are outside;

4. Tie the bag around the orchid stem to prevent it from slipping;

5. Spray the flower stalk with water every day to maintain humidity inside the bag;

6. In two or three weeks you will see buds appear on the flower stalk.

Why does it work?

This method of stimulating orchid flowering is based on imitation of the natural conditions in which these flowers grow in nature.

Orchids are tropical plants that grow in humid and warm forests.

During the rainy season they receive a lot of moisture and nutrients, which promote their growth and development.

During periods of drought, they become stressed and begin to bloom to ensure their reproduction.

The bag placed on the flower stalk creates a greenhouse effect, increasing the temperature and humidity around the flower stalk.

This makes the orchid think that the rainy season has arrived and it begins to form buds.

When the buds appear, the bag can be removed and the orchid will continue to bloom.
