Already in December, summer residents can begin sowing some flowers and ornamental plants for seedlings.

Early sowing benefits the plants, ensures long flowering, and also increases the chances that the crops will take root after transplanting.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, recommends sowing slow-growing flowers and plants in the first days and weeks of winter.

These may be ornamental crops, which take more than 150-200 days from the date of sowing to flowering.

Ornamental crops

First of all, this includes plants that are grown for the purpose of further transplantation into open ground.

These can be petunias, eustoma and viola, verbena, lobelia, delphinium, primroses and other flowers.

Due to the fact that the seedlings will begin to grow from the beginning of winter, they will gain strength for lush flowering.

For perennial crops, this is an excellent chance to gain strength before transplanting and an opportunity to take root in a new place.

What you will need

But early sowing alone will not be enough. Most ornamental crops are demanding of growing conditions.

Therefore, you will have to protect the seedlings from temperature changes and drafts, provide the necessary level of air humidity, and do not forget about fertilizing and soil quality.

You also need to take care of purchasing phytolamps. Without additional lighting, many crops simply will not grow in winter.
