Wood ash will turn from a useful fertilizer into a poison if used incorrectly.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh, an expert of the online publication Belnovosti, agronomist and landscape designer, tells us what you shouldn’t do with ash.

How not to use ash

Firstly, ash cannot be used to feed crops that like acidic soils, in particular conifers, hydrangeas and roses.

Secondly, you cannot feed plants with ash and mineral fertilizers at the same time. It is especially dangerous to apply phosphorus fertilizers after ash.

Thirdly, not all ash is suitable for plant feeding. For example, you cannot take ash from a barbecue if you used lighter fluid.
