Usually, gardeners are not advised to feed indoor plants in winter. Flower and ornamental crops are in a state of rest at this time.

But as for geranium, which often blooms even in winter, there may be exceptions. With the help of additional feeding, you can achieve lush flowering and even prolong it.

Anastasia Kovrizhnykh , an expert of the online publication "BelNovosti", an agronomist and landscape designer, told whether it is necessary to feed geraniums in winter.

What does geranium need in winter?

Firstly, moderate watering – once a week is enough.

Secondly, you need to control the air temperature - in cool and damp conditions, the roots of the flower may begin to rot.

Thirdly, additional feeding is necessary, but once every 1-1.5 months is quite sufficient.

In order for geranium to bloom, the plant needs to be given a good rest. This should be done before or after flowering.

It is important to remove faded inflorescences, dry branches and cut off unnecessary shoots in autumn. In winter, only dried flowers are removed after flowering has ended.

How to feed geraniums

The easiest way to prepare a nutrient mixture at home is to make an aqueous iodine solution.

One drop of iodine is required per liter of water. The fertilizer is applied once every 2 weeks in the amount of 50 ml per plant.

According to flower growers, this simple additive will prolong the flowering of geraniums until the New Year holidays.
