Every gardener knows about the benefits of mulch in the beds. It prevents the soil from overheating, reduces the intensity of moisture evaporation from the soil, and prevents weeds from growing.

It happens that the protective layer becomes covered with mold, and then there can be no talk of any benefit from this layer.

An expert of the online publication BelNovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh told what to do if mulch is covered with mold.

Summer residents need to take the following measures.

1. Remove the layer of mulch that has become moldy.

2. Inspect the mulch for fungal diseases and remove any affected areas.

3. Clean the mulch from plant debris and other contaminants.

4. Dry the mulch in a well-ventilated area.

5. Apply a new layer of mulch to the cleared surface.

6. If mold continues to appear, check to see if the humidity in the area where the mulch is located is too high. Measures may need to be taken to reduce the humidity.

7. If the mulch is still moldy after all these steps have been taken, it may be worth replacing it with new material.
