Why experienced gardeners stick matches into plant pots: the effect is surprising

Often, flies – sciriads or fruit flies, which love a humid environment – start up in flower pots.
They can also be attracted by the incorrect use of organic matter (tea leaves, coffee grounds) as fertilizer.
Experienced gardeners get rid of midges using ordinary matches. According to them, the method works without fail.
How matches help against midges
The matches are inserted into the ground with the sulfur side down. The plants are watered as usual. According to gardeners, the sulfur in the matches dissolves in the soil and helps get rid of flies and their larvae.
The process takes at least 3-5 days, but can last for 2-3 weeks. The time period depends on the number of insects and larvae.
How to use
This is a folk method, so there are no exact instructions. But on average, one pot requires 7-10 pieces.
The matches are inserted into the soil with their heads down, deepening them by 1-2 cm. The distance between them is 4-5 cm. The sulfur dissolves in about 2-3 days. If the midges are not defeated, then a new batch of matches is placed until the insects disappear.
