How to Care for Everbearing Raspberries in Spring: Do It Now

There are several options for growing remontant raspberries, which bear fruit in the spring and in late summer or early fall.

But without proper care you can't count on two harvests. The bush needs a lot of strength and nutrition for this, and double fruiting depletes its reserves.

That is why some gardeners prefer to harvest one rich crop of raspberries.

To do this, at the end of the season it was necessary to remove the fruiting shoots right down to the base, in place of which one-year shoots should grow this season.

They will start to yield in the second half of summer or by September. In this regard, much depends on the variety.

But this needs to be taken care of in the spring.

First, do not allow the soil in the raspberry patch to form a crust. To avoid constantly loosening it, you need to mulch the soil with bark, wood chips, compost or straw.

Before this, you need to apply the first fertilizer:

  • superphosphate is added in the fall;
  • after winter, nitrogen fertilizers (ammonium nitrate is possible);
  • Complex additives are added if phosphorus was not added in the fall.

After applying fertilizers, watering is carried out.

Secondly, it is necessary to carry out preventive treatment against pests and diseases.

To combat weevils, aphids, raspberry flies, fungi, etc., the berry bush is treated twice a month with biological preparations or folk remedies.

Treatment is carried out after rain.
