The onion fly is dangerous for many varieties of onions.

The insect larvae cause serious damage to the bulbs. The situation can lead to a complete loss of the crop.

The problem is the small size of the pest: sometimes the summer resident does not even notice it.

As a result, there is a high risk of missing the appearance of an uninvited “guest” in the garden, which will lead to at least a decrease in the yield of a popular garden crop.

How to protect onions

First, you need to choose the most suitable place to plant the plant.

It is desirable that this be a plot next to which tomatoes and carrots are grown.

The proximity of a representative of the amaryllis family to these crops reduces the risk of an “attack” by the onion fly.

Secondly, it is advisable to sprinkle the bed with tobacco dust. You can find such a product, specially designed to protect plants from pests, in gardening stores.

Tobacco dust has a strong smell, which repels the onion fly.

Before use, the product must be mixed with unburned wood residues (3 tablespoons of tobacco component per 300 grams of ash).

The mixture should be scattered on the soil where the onion grows. After this, it is advisable to loosen the soil.
