There are a great many ways to combat couch grass.
Most of them are folk methods. They are quite labor-intensive.
Therefore, when choosing an option, it is worth considering individual conditions: area of the plot, amount of free time, personal preferences.
1. The easiest, but labor-intensive way is to remove the grass manually. It is better to use a pitchfork rather than a shovel, so as not to damage the roots when cultivating the soil.
It is necessary to extract all the roots that are located at a depth of at least 20 cm. The method is relevant if there is little couch grass. The method is environmentally friendly and easy to understand.
2. The essence of another method is to trim the couch grass once every 20 days. This way, summer residents do not allow the plant to grow. The idea is that the thicker the above-ground part, the stronger the root. Therefore, couch grass is not allowed to grow higher than 10-15 cm.
3. Couch grass does not grow well in the shade. If you cover the weed with cardboard or black film and leave it like that all summer, then in the fall you can easily remove both the shoots and the root.
4. Mulching is relevant for a small area. In spring, the area where the weed has taken root is covered with a thick layer of mulch or a flat cutter is used.
5. Green manure, such as buckwheat, is planted next to the couch grass. The green mass is then mowed and the area is plowed. This way, you can get rid of the couch grass and improve the quality of the soil.
