Phacelia as a green manure for the garden: pros and cons

19.03.2023 11:13

There is an opinion among summer residents that phacelia is the best green manure.

Experienced agronomists share this point of view, but there are several nuances.

Phacelia is included in the water-leaf family. There are no "relatives" among vegetables.

This is a big plus, because after phacelia you can safely plant any plants and not be afraid of the appearance of diseases or pests left by the green manure.

Phacelia is an excellent honey plant that attracts bees to the site. The insects pollinate not only the green manure, but also other plantings growing nearby.

The downside of phacelia is its weak root system. Therefore, the plant is valuable for fertilizing the soil, but not for loosening it.

Mustard or oats cope with this task better. They improve heavy soil, coping with it better than phacelia.

Green manure grows up to 40 cm, but there are crops that produce a larger mass.
