Good flowering in spring and abundant fruiting of gooseberries is a summer resident’s dream.
But for this, the amateur gardener needs to put his hand to it, otherwise there will be no enviable harvest.
The first important event should be planned for spring. Gooseberry pruning is a necessary task that will ensure a rich harvest.
It is advisable to prune gooseberries twice per season. In spring, this is done before the buds open. If an early spring is expected, the procedure can be carried out at the end of February or beginning of March. In autumn, do not rush to prune, waiting for the leaves to fall.
1. Cut out all unnecessary, weak and poorly located branches. Leave 4-6 strong root shoots.
2. For bushes that are 5-6 years old or older, remove 3-4 old, weakly fruiting branches. Instead, leave a similar number of basal one-year shoots.
3. In the long term, a correct raised bush is formed, removing creeping, horizontally located shoots.
