Summer residents know how to get an early harvest of greens, but not everyone realizes that carrots can be grown as early as June.

The winter planting method has advantages that outweigh its disadvantages.

Some gardeners do it this way: they sow some carrots before winter, and the rest, as usual. This way, they actually get two harvests of root crops – at the beginning and end of summer.

Advantages of winter sowing

Sometimes summer residents fail to get uniform carrot shoots. Agronomists have indicated that when sowing in winter, seedlings sprout together. In addition, plants are not attacked by pests, such as the carrot fly.

Subtleties of sowing

It should be noted that such carrots are stored worse, so they should be used during the summer.

Early and mid-early varieties are not suitable for sowing. They can be destroyed by recurrent frosts. It is better to sow mid-late and late varieties.

Carrots should not be sown after root crops (potatoes, beets, parsnips, carrots, rutabaga, fennel, Jerusalem artichoke, turnips).
