How to Choose Strawberry Propagation Whiskers: You May Be Doing It Wrong Too

To propagate a favorite strawberry variety, gardeners save the plant's runners. In this case, they have to sacrifice the harvest, since the plant spends some of its energy on growth and development, instead of giving it to flowering and fruiting.

But it is also important to choose the right whiskers for propagation.

We'll tell you how not to make a mistake in your choice.

1. You need to choose in advance. You need to pay attention to those bushes that gave the best harvest and survived the winter best. You need to leave appropriate marks near such plants.

2. As soon as the mother bushes are about to bear fruit, you need to cut off all the buds and everything that will appear in the future. In this case, the bush will direct its energy to vegetative propagation and you can collect excellent planting material.

3. In June, rosettes will start to appear on the released tendrils. Summer residents recommend leaving those that grow closer to the bush on the strongest and longest tendrils. Everything else is cut off. You can take 1-2 such rosettes from one bush.

4. After the selected rosettes have taken root, the runners are cut off from the mother bush and they continue to be cared for as seedlings.

Don't forget that after transplanting, young bushes must be insulated for the winter so that they are not damaged by frost.
