How to Stratify Seeds at Home: Cold, Warm, and Combined

Stratification is nothing more than a special technique that helps the seeds of some plants to germinate.

An expert of the online publication Belnovosti, agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh told how to carry out this operation yourself.

So, if you have chosen the cold stratification method, the seeds will need to be kept at a fairly low positive temperature – from 0 to 4 degrees.

At this temperature and humidity of 75%, the grains should last from 1-2 months to six months.

This option is most often used for berry seeds.

With warm stratification, the seeds must be kept at a temperature of 22 to 25 degrees Celsius for 2-3 hours, and sometimes even 2 days.

Warm stratification is applicable to peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants and watermelon.

In the case of combined stratification, the seeds should be exposed to heat and cold in turn.

This option is relevant for slow-germinating seeds, which include apricot, hawthorn, plum or viburnum pits.
