Delicate sweet persimmon fruits entice with their beautiful appearance and amazing taste.
Finding seeds in fruits, many people wonder whether it is possible to grow a tree from them and whether it can bear fruit.
Many people have succeeded in growing persimmons, and some have even tasted their harvest. Advice from those who have managed to achieve this result helps beginners to follow their example.
Persimmon reproduces well by seeds, so even from purchased fruits you can get a seedling. To extract seeds, you should choose a large, healthy and ripe fruit.
As for the planting technology, opinions differ.
Some people plant the seeds directly into the soil before they have time to dry out.
Others are of the opinion that seeds must be stratified, that is, treated with cold, simulating natural processes.
To do this, place the seeds on a damp cotton pad, put them in a bag or a sealed container and put them in the refrigerator for 2-3 weeks, airing them from time to time. After that, plant them in the soil, put them in a warm place and wait for the sprout to appear.
Each person decides for themselves which method to choose. But it is worth paying attention to some nuances.
1. The soil should be light. You can use soil for seedlings or decorative leafy indoor plants. If you take soil from the garden, make sure it is not dense. Adding vermiculite or regular sand will help loosen it. It would not be superfluous to add non-acidic peat.
2. Seeds can sprout in a month, or they can lie in the ground much longer. Do not rush to be disappointed if sprouts are not visible for a long time. Perhaps they will appear later.
3. Keep the soil moist, but do not overwater. Stagnant water will cause rotting.
4. You can germinate the seeds in a damp cloth or on cotton pads, making sure that the material does not dry out. When a white root appears, the seed is placed in a pot. The advantage of this method is that you can germinate many seeds at once, without taking up space on the windowsill, monitor their condition, and plant only those that are viable.
This is a heat-loving plant, and in cold climates it is grown only indoors. In winter, it needs sub-zero temperatures so that the tree goes into a dormant period. Minus 10 degrees is the optimal winter temperature for persimmon. If the frost is stronger, the tree will die.
A wild plant grows from the seeds. In theory, it can produce fruit. But in practice, this happens many years later, and you are unlikely to enjoy the taste of the wild plant. But if you graft a branch of a varietal plant onto a rootstock grown from a seed, you can get a good harvest of persimmon, growing it in a container.
