Grass clippings are known to be one of the most affordable mulch options.
As the expert of the online publication BelNovosti, scientist-agronomist, landscape designer Anastasia Kovrizhnykh explained, such covering material is usually used to cover (in a thin layer) annuals, strawberries, tree trunks.
You can also use mown grass to mulch your lawn.
This mulch has a number of advantages, for example, it contains a large amount of nitrogen, which is useful for the soil.
Also, mown grass quickly decomposes, nourishes and warms the beds.
It is also important that grass mulch creates all the right conditions for the propagation of hay bacillus. It is also called a natural antibiotic-fungicide and is valued for its help in the fight against plant diseases.
If you want mulching with grass to benefit crops rather than harm them, you should follow simple rules.
1. Before you use grass as mulch, dry and chop it.
2. Mown grass should be laid out around plants in such a way that it does not come into contact with their stems and leaves.
3. From time to time, the mulch material needs to be stirred up – this will increase its air permeability.
4. If there is prolonged rain outside, hurry to remove such mulch from the beds. Otherwise, there is a high risk of rotting of the plants.
5. And finally: never use grass that has been treated with herbicide as mulch.
