A Forgotten Recipe from the USSR: How to Make Sprat Cutlets in Tomato Sauce in 5 Minutes

The dish of sprats in tomato sauce was a real hit of Soviet cuisine.

These cutlets were juicy and had a crispy crust. The dish was prepared quickly, some housewives managed to cook it in 5 minutes.

In the 1970s, the USSR introduced "Fish Thursday", so fish dishes became popular again. There were attempts to popularize seafood among the population in the 1930s, with the help of Anastas Mikoyan, but the second attempt was more successful.

The list of ingredients for cutlets consists of:

  • sprat in tomato sauce – 1 can;
  • egg – 1 pc.;
  • onion – 2 onions;
  • rice – 1 cup;
  • flour – 2 tablespoons;
  • salt;
  • breadcrumbs – 100 g;
  • vegetable oil.

Preparation

1. Place the onion and sprat in a blender bowl. Blend the ingredients until puree.

2. Place the boiled rice in a deep bowl. Add the fish and onion mixture there.

3. After mixing, add the egg, salt and flour. Then the ingredients need to be thoroughly mixed again.

4. Next, to prevent the mince from sticking to your hands, you need to wet them with water. Form the cutlets and roll them in breadcrumbs.

5. Place the frying pan on the fire, pour in some oil and heat the pan. Then put the cutlets in and fry for 2-3 minutes on each side.
