For the first time in Belarus, doctors successfully performed a unique operation on a child to correct a rare congenital heart defect.
It was carried out by specialists from the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Pediatric Surgery.
The Nikaidoh operation was performed in Belarus for the first time, and this two-stage surgical approach was used for the first time in the world, the press service of the Ministry of Health reports on its Telegram channel.
The director of this Republican Scientific and Practical Center, the chief freelance pediatric cardiac surgeon of the Ministry of Health, Konstantin Drozdovsky, explained that the operation was carried out in two stages due to the complexity of the anatomy of the heart defect.
According to him, at the first stage, when the child was 5 months old, X-ray endovascular intervention (pulmonary artery stenting) was performed.
And then, at the age of 1 year and 4 months (July 31, 2024), he underwent radical surgical correction of the heart pathology, the specialist said.
It is noted that doctors have used a unique approach, including one for global cardiac surgery.
As a result, the risks of “radical surgical intervention in the neonatal period” were significantly reduced, which made it possible to perform the operation in a more optimal time frame.
