How to Choose Sunscreen for Your Child: Saying “Children’s” Isn’t Enough

Before we begin discussing the choice of baby sunscreen, it is worth remembering that babies under 3 months old should not be exposed to the sun in principle, with or without sunscreen.

But if the child has crossed this age limit, it is worth thinking about choosing a product with the required SPF value.

What is SPF

SPF stands for sun protection filters, or components that are responsible for sun protection. It determines the degree of protection against ultraviolet radiation and indicates how effectively the product blocks harmful ultraviolet rays.

In children's cosmetology, sunscreens of plant origin are predominantly used, such as oils and carotenoids.

In adult cosmetology, various types of filters are used, including mineral, synthetic and chemical.

Determining the duration of protection of a cream is quite simple – you need to multiply the SPF value by 5. Thus, one SPF unit ensures safe stay in the sun for 5 minutes.

For 10-15 minutes of sun exposure, a product with SPF 5 is sufficient. Using a cream with SPF 50 for children is not justified, since even an adult finds it difficult to withstand such a long period of time in the sun.

Understanding UVA/UVB

It is best to choose a cream with the UVA/UVB designation, as it provides protection from ultraviolet radiation types A and B.

Waterproof or not

And finally: some parents believe that waterproof cream is only needed during bathing, although in fact this is not true - if the child sweats a lot, then this type of product is preferable.

Previously, we talked about how expectant mothers can improve their sleep during pregnancy.
