In Germany, a site was discovered where almost 6,000 new cars were standing, rusting and rotting.
Their downtime (the parking lot belongs to the logistics company CAT) is explained by a lack of demand.
As TASS reports with reference to the Bild newspaper, this site is a transit point for the largest automakers in western Germany.
The German publication calculated that the value of the idle vehicles is at least 300 million euros.
I have never encountered anything like this here before, and I have been working here for more than 10 years,” a logistics company employee told a Bild journalist.
According to him, many of the cars located here have been parked there for more than a year.
In turn, the newspaper clarifies: all parking spaces here are full.
The largest number of idle vehicles, including electric cars, are represented by Volkswagen and Audi
According to Bild's estimates, these cars cannot be sold due to low demand for them.
According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority of Germany, 168,610 Audi vehicles were registered in the first 10 months of this year – 17.9% below the level for the same period in 2023.
A total of 2.3 million new cars were registered in Germany from January to October 2024, which is 0.4% lower than the previous year, said Frank Schwope, an economist at the Hannover University of Applied Sciences.
But a CAT representative explains the overcrowding at transit points by high prices and problems with the electrification of the automotive industry.
He added that his company has an indirect benefit from the situation, since car manufacturers have to pay the CAT for parking spaces.
